The year of the dragon

As part of its commitment to global and multicultural education, New School Lyon, a bilingual French-English school located in Lyon's 8th arrondissement, recently celebrated the Year of the Dragon. This festival, which is part of the Chinese New Year tradition, provides an exceptional opportunity for students to discover and celebrate the cultural richness and traditions of another part of the world.

What is the Year of the Dragon?

The Chinese zodiac, a 12-year cycle, includes the Year of the Dragon among its representative animals, with one animal representing each year. The dragon, which is the only mythical animal in this zodiac, symbolises strength, luck and health. Being born in the Year of the Dragon is considered very auspicious and associated with qualities of leadership and ambition. Celebrating the Year of the Dragon is a major event in many Asian cultures, accompanied by festivities that include parades, fireworks, traditional dances and much more.

Celebrations at New School Lyon

To mark this special event, New School Lyon organised a series of fun and educational activities to immerse the children in Chinese culture. Through art workshops, pupils had the opportunity to learn about the importance of the dragon in Chinese culture and to explore the various traditions associated with Chinese New Year. These festivities are part of the school's holistic approach to preparing students to become informed, respectful and engaged global citizens.
