A journey into the history of St Patrick's Day
New School Lyon had the pleasure of celebrating St Patrick's Day on 15 March. This festival, originally from Ireland, honours Saint Patrick, the patron saint of the country, known for having introduced Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. Legend has it that he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, making this plant a national symbol and the colour green the emblem of this festive day.
Beyond its religious origin, St Patrick's Day has become a celebration of Irish culture, marked by parades, traditional music, dances, and, of course, the wearing of green. It has spread far beyond Ireland's borders, becoming a global event celebrated by all those who appreciate the richness of Irish culture.
The importance of English-speaking culture at New School Lyon
At New School Lyon, learning English and immersion in English-speaking cultures from the youngest age are at the heart of our educational project. Celebrating St Patrick's Day fits perfectly into this approach, offering pupils the opportunity to explore a rich cultural tradition and deepen their knowledge of English in a festive, playful setting.
This special day is an opportunity for our pupils to become familiar with Anglo-Saxon customs and understand the importance of multiculturalism in our globalised world. Through educational and cultural activities, we encourage our pupils' curiosity and open-mindedness - essential elements of our educational approach.
A success shared by pupils and teachers
The St Patrick's Day celebration at New School Lyon was a resounding success, both for pupils and teachers. The day strengthened the bond between members of our educational community, in an atmosphere of joy and sharing. The smiles on the children's faces, dressed in green for the occasion, show the joy they had in taking part in this unique celebration.
Beyond the festivity, this event was a wonderful opportunity to remind us of the importance of cultural openness and linguistic diversity in learning. New School Lyon remains committed to offering an active, personalised education, where every pupil can thrive in a stimulating bilingual environment.
St Patrick's Day was much more than a celebration: it was a vivid expression of the values we hold dear, marking a new successful step in our mission to awaken cultural and linguistic diversity. To learn more about our news, head over here!
