Thanksgiving at New School

Dear parents, Thanksgiving is approaching - we will celebrate it on Thursday 23 November 2023. A historical and cultural opportunity to discover the origins of this Anglo-Saxon tradition.

Thanksgiving à New School

Dear parents,

Thanksgiving is coming… It will be celebrated on Thursday 23 November 2023.

The story of Thanksgiving:

In the year 1620, around a hundred English dissenters, known today as the Pilgrim Fathers, set sail on the Mayflower from England. They left for America to seek a better life. They landed in Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts. Not knowing how to work the land, many of them perished, and it was the Native Americans of the Wampanoag tribe who taught them how to fish, hunt, grow corn, and raise turkeys. As a thank-you for their help, the English settlers organised a great celebration named THANKSGIVING ("thank you for helping us"). They invited the Wampanoag chief and his men to share their meal. Since then, every fourth Thursday in November, this celebration has been observed in the United States in memory of these Native Americans, expressing the full value of mutual support and sharing.

To celebrate Thanksgiving, we are organising a shared snack within the classes on Thursday 23 November. We ask each parent to send their child to school on that day with a snack to share:

• store-bought cakes

• biscuits

• dried fruit

• fresh fruit

• a drink

The shared snack will take place in the afternoon of Thursday 23 November in a joyful and festive atmosphere in each class. Beforehand, the English teachers will have reminded their pupils, or introduced new pupils to, this celebration of friendship, joy, and sharing. At lunchtime in the canteen, the typical Thanksgiving meal will be on the menu for the children and staff, with a few signature dishes: corn salad / cheddar cake, spiced poultry fillet / spiced pollock fillet, roast potato and sweet potato duo / butternut purée.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL!

Nathalie,

Head of teaching.
